Treating Anxiety in Teens

The first line of defense for treating stress, anxiety, or trauma symptoms is therapy. Sometimes, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibition (SSRI) medication may be prescribed to treat teen anxiety.

Here are some common types of therapies that you can use as an alternative teen anxiety cure

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

CBT is the most popular form of therapy to treat all kinds of anxiety disorders. This type of therapy focuses on challenging negative thought patterns and core beliefs, while gradually facing fears and developing healthy coping skills. CBT is a more effective therapy than traditional therapies and can provide relief in shorter sessions.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, (EMDR)

EMDR is based upon an exercise that involves the use of eye movement desensitization. The therapist creates an environment that allows the client to relive their trauma while they are receiving eye movement therapy. This activates the hippocampus and timestamps the traumatic memory to make it more powerful. This therapy is more effective than other forms of trauma treatment and requires fewer sessions.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).

CBT with a trauma-centered focus is one of the best forms of CBT. This therapy helps families to come together and deal with trauma as a whole. It also builds trust and communication.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, (DBT),

DBT, a type of therapy, is rooted in CBT. It is designed to help clients achieve emotional balance and control, manage emotions, and cope with all the stressors that life can throw at them. Although this type of therapy usually lasts six months each person is different so it can vary.
