The Different Types of Prescription Lenses

The prescription lenses that are placed inside of your glasses vary based on your eye needs. An optometrist will perform an eye exam to determine what type of lenses you need and the strength of the lenses.

Here are a few of the different types of prescription lenses that may be prescribed to you by an eye doctor:

Single Vision Lenses

Single vision lenses are the lenses most often prescribed by optometrists. This type of lens can help patients see in the distance, up close, in the middle, or in the distance. If all you need is help reading or some distance away, this is the lens for you.

Progressive lens

If you have trouble seeing from a distance, progressive lenses may be best for you. With these glasses, you can see at different distances without having to take off your glasses or exchange them with someone else. If you need constant vision assistance, these lenses can be prescribed by an ophthalmologist.

Bifocal lens

Bifocal lenses allow the wearer to see clearly at close range and see clearly at a distance. However, there is no intermediate transition or length between them. This is best for those who cannot see far or short distances but can see well up close.

Active lens

Active lenses are often prescribed to children and people with active lifestyles. These types of glasses are thinner and lighter than traditional glasses, but are more durable and are less likely to shatter or break if dropped, sat, or kicked.

High index glasses

If you have strong eyesight, you can count on thick glasses. But high refractive index lenses change that. These lenses are ideal for those with strong prescriptions but are much thinner and lighter.
